Polyphemus

Legend tells about Polyphemus, a giant with a single eye in the middle of the forehead, who forged lightnings for Zeus inside mount Etna.

Love

In love with the beautiful Galatea, nymph of the sea, Polyphemus asked her in marriage but Galatea, who was in love with Aci, a young shepherd, rejected him.

Jelousy

Blinded by jelousy, Polyphemus grabbed a massive lava rock and hurled it at the poor shepherd boy, who died crushed by the rock.

Eternity

In the depth of despair, Galatea cried his beloved Aci over the seashore. Her endless tears awoke a sense of compassion in the Gods, who turned Aci into a river, so that him and Galatea could meet every day at sea.

Aci

The names of the towns of the so called “Terra di Aci” come from this legend.

Faraglioni

The echo of the legend of the cyclops still resonates among the Faraglioni at Actirezza, these enormous basaltic rocks that have become the symbol of the Riviera dei Ciclopi, and that were hurled at the fleeing Ulysses by Polyphemus in Omero’s Odyssey.
